Born in Central Auckland in 1940, Binney studied at Elam and attained a Diploma in Fine Arts. He was particularly interested in bird watching, and the personal relationship one felt with landscape when partaking in it. He painted with a range of materials – from oil and acrylic to in and carbon pencils. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council travel fellowship and subsequently travelled to Mexico, London and Australia. He then returned to New Zealand and spent the last decade of his life teaching at Elam. Graduate Dip.FA, Elam School of Fine Arts, 1961.
